Fasching, the German version of Mardi Gras.
Germans get a whole entire week to celebrate this partying time, also sometimes called the 'ski break', in February. I had a lot of fun spending late nights out having fun with costumed friends, going skiing, and enjoying time during the break with my second host family. Fasching is a lot of fun, lots of music, but I would be lying to say I wasn't sometimes mildly surprised at the wild attitudes of some of the participants. That sort of partying doesn't often happen in Northern Minnesota. I just thought I would post a few pictures from the break.

My host mom Barbara as a 'Bayerisch Lion' and I, dressed as a Coca Cola bottle.

'Fasching' ski tour - a group of my friends invited me to go on a ski tour with them ( climbing up the mountain with ski felt, then skiing back down through the deep snow) , covering 4 peaks. I ended up not doing the tour with them because of avalance dangers, but I met up with them later. The trick was everyone had to come in costume. :)
Standing at the peak of the first mountain (each mountains peak has a cross at the top, thats how you know you've reached the top), Annegretl and Franzi as 'old school' skiiers.
Watching the parade - just like St. Urhos in Finland, they like to take people hostage to go along for a while with the parade, especially old witches. I felt quite bad for the poor girl. I personally was hugged three times, and then decided to hide myself behind my host parents.
'Garder Girls' - something very typical for Fasching, they dance along to the brass bands in 'perfect unision'.
One of the brass bands that played during the parade - they're super good, like a marching band, except they tend to play more modern songs people can sing along to.
